ACT Greens: Simple ‘law and order’ approach won’t go far enough to curb revenge porn

The ACT Greens today welcomed a commitment from Mr Hanson to address revenge porn in the Territory.

“This is a complex issue that requires input from a range of stakeholders, including leading experts and relevant community groups,” said ACT Greens MLA and Member for Murrumbidgee Caroline Le Couteur.

“That’s why last week I tabled a petition in the Assembly that reflects concerns in our community around this issue. As I flagged when I tabled the petition, the ACT Greens are also working with key stakeholders to comprehensively address a range of important concerns.

“We must tackle revenge porn in a way that ‘future-proofs’ our legislation from rapid changes in technology, and draws from best-practice models.

“At first flush, it seems that the bill put forth by Mr Hanson today draws on a Victorian model that we know does not go far enough to curb this disturbing trend.

“It’s clear that we must go beyond a simple ‘law and order’ approach on this issue. We look forward to working with both the Liberals and the Labor Party to ensure that we act to curb the devastating impacts of revenge porn in the ACT.”
